History

The Midway Volunteer Fire Company began providing fire protection for Buckingham and Solebury Townships when a group of 144 concerned residents, farmers and business owners signed a petition regarding the formation of a fire company. A meeting to form the new fire company was held in the Lahaska Methodist Church in May of 1931. Because of the central location between the fire companies in Doylestown and New Hope, it was decided to name the new fire company Midway Volunteer Fire Company.

On June 4,1931, Midway purchased it’s first fire truck, which was a second hand chemical truck from the Humane Fire Company of Norristown for $450. Proceeds from the first fund raising event held by the fire company, were used to purchase the fire company’s first brand new fire truck for $1,500 on February 1, 1932. This fund raising event was the very first carnival, which was held across the street from its current location, at “High Winds” next to what is now Holicong Park. The Carnival is still held today and is still a crucial fund raising tool that enables us to purchase new trucks and equipment.

From its humble beginnings in a rented garage in Lahaska, and a simple used chemical fire truck of 1920’s vintage, the Fire Company now maintains a fleet of nine modern and specialized emergency vehicles housed in two fire stations in Lahaska and Mechanicsville.

Over the course of the past seventy plus years, the Fire Company has progressed to be one of the best equipped, state of the art, fire and rescue companies in Bucks County. While the fire fighting technology and techniques have changed significantly over the years, the reliance on highly trained, dedicated volunteers supported by an active auxiliary continues to be crucial to the effectiveness and success of the Fire Company. Today the Fire Company has over sixty highly trained and dedicated volunteer firefighters on call twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week.
